XI.—An officer is required to become efficient in drill. After passing out of the Police Training School, he will attend such routine parades as may be directed. The study of Chinese is compulsory for all European Officers and no officer will be promoted to the rank of Sergeant who has not passed the qualifying examination (First Certificate). An officer selected for promotion to the rank of Sub-Inspector who has not obtained a Second Certificate in Chinese will be required to take Chinese to the standard of the Second Certificate as a compulsory subject in the examination for promotion to that rank. (With the permission of the Inspector General of Police, Hindustani may be substituted for Chinese.)

XII. Officers in charge of stations may be required to perform, in addition to their police duties, duties for other Departments without extra remuneration.

XIII.-Officers are provided with free quarters, fuel and light (the consumption of which is regulated according to Departmental Orders).

XIV. The following are provided free :---

Beds and bedding, summer and winter uniform, great coats, and boots or money ($24 per annum)

in lieu of boots.

XV.-Men engaged on the Detective Staff receive an allowance of $12 per month in lieu of uniform. XVI.-An officer on joining is provided with table linen, cutlery, glass, crockery ware, and cooking utensils for the sum of $5.

XVII. Special rules, approved by the Governor in Council, govern sick leave, medical attendance and hospital charges. An officer is provided with free medical attendance. No stoppages of any kind are made from an officer's pay for absence from duty on account of injury or sickness received or incurred in the performance of duty.

If he is confined to hospital through sickness from climatic or ordinary causes, the following stoppages are made in respect of his maintenance whilst in hospital :-

When the sickness of a subordinate officer or constable is caused by intemperance or is certified by a Government Medical Officer to be due to venereal disease which has become aggravated by concealment, or to sickness or injury which is purposely self inflicted, he shall be provided with medical attendance, medical comforts, diet and accommodation, but his pay shall be stopped for so long as he is absent from duty.

XVIII. Sick leave up to a maximum of twenty-eight days on full pay in any numerical year may be granted to any officer by the Inspector General of Police, provided the necessity for such leave is certified by a Government Medical Officer. Absence from duty on Medical Certificate beyond a period of twenty-eight days in any numerical year, except by permission of the Governor will be treated as full pay, or half pay leave or leave without pay as the case may be.

QUALIFICATIONS.

Age-to be not less than 21 and not more than 25 years of age.

Minimum height-5 feet 8 inches.

Chest measurement-33 inches for 5 feet 8 inches (increasing proportionately).

SALARY AND ALLOWANCES.

The following rates of salary and allowances at present obtain but are liable to revision from time to time:-

(1) The European Force is composed of

Chief Inspectors, at £600, rising by annual increments of £25 to £700. Inspectors, at £475, rising by annual increments of £20 to £535. Sub-Inspectors, at £370, rising by annual increments of £15 to £430. Sergeants at £260, rising by 2 increments of £20 and 5 of £10 to £350.

Lance Sergeants and Constables at £190, rising by annual increments of £10 to £240.

(2) Non-pensionable allowances for knowledge of languages are granted as follows :--
